On Friday 27th May Wimbledon Common Prep School held its annual sports day at the impressive Kingsway ground. The weather improved as the morning progressed and it ended up being perfect weather conditions. The boys began by running a short lap of honour in their houses before being split into their groups ready to compete.
Each year group took part in five field events that tested their physical abilities, accuracy in Sink the Bismark, agility in an obstacle course, endurance in the mini-marathon event and strength (which was a favourite) where some of the lucky boys got to team up with Mr Bragg and test their might against the willing parents in the Tug of War competition.
Once the carousel of field events was completed and the boys had a well-deserved rest, the next test of speed lay ahead. The reception boys competed in the 50 metre sprint. Luca from RJD set a new Reception 50 metre record with a phenomenal time of 9.94 seconds. The Year One and Two boys then followed suit and took part in the 60 metre sprint before each year group took part in their house relays.
Mrs Dodd was entrusted with the critical job of recording all the scores and adding up all the points and once the individual sprints and relays were completed Mr Morrison announced that Kingsmere were crowned Sports day winners!
The final points were as follows:
- Kingsmere 318
- Ravine 266
- Queensmere 252
- Bluegate 247
Archie and Sebastian from RJD loved sports day and their favourite event was the relay race. Konstantinos from 2ED said “I thought sports day was extremely fun because of the tug of war and the mini marathon and I really liked winning the gold medal.” Joshua, from 2ED said “sports day was extraordinary because I really liked the shot put”. The Kingsmere athletics captain, Oscar from 2AR led his house to victory and said “Sports Day was brilliant, I really liked all the events, especially the long jump because I jumped really far and Mrs Buck got Mr Wright to do the long jump and he jumped really far too!”
