Music

Music is an important and popular part of the childrens’ experience of WCPS. The teaching of music develops their ability to listen and increases their self-discipline and creativity.

Our aim in music lessons is, first and foremost, to develop a life-long love of music. Music helps to develop skills that support learning in other areas of the curriculum and that are needed for both life and work, for example listening skills, the ability to concentrate, creativity, intuition, aesthetic sensitivity, perseverance, self-confidence and sensitivity towards others.

Active music making lies at the heart of our work in class, through playing and singing, in large and small groups and individually, and to establish foundations for their future musical development. Rather like we learn to talk before we read or write, so we do with music – making music, and later learning to read and write it. They have a weekly music lesson with a specialist music teacher. Each lesson includes performing, listening & appraising and the development of reading and composing skills. Most importantly, music is fun.

Children have opportunities to perform for an audience during regular class assemblies when their families and friends are invited to attend. We also have class concerts and during music lessons, and school concerts in front of parents and other members of the school. Year 2 produce an annual fully staged musical which aims to be of a high standard and enjoyed by boys and audience alike. The school has a choir for children in Years 1 and 2, which has the opportunity, as the year goes on, to perform for the whole school and parents.

Some children at WCPS have developed extraordinary musical skills through the lessons they receive both in and outside of school. We celebrate their success and enthusiasm by offering regular opportunities for them to perform to the whole school. Later in the year, we also have a music club for children to develop group instrumental skills.
